Definition

"Y" Spindle Kit

Sometimes you need to be able to mount a gate to a stairway spindle. Several manufacturers use a "Y" shaped clamp to accomplish this. Thus the name&

4 Point Mounting Hardware

For greater stability some pet gates, when mounted, have a locking mechanism at 4 different points of contact.

Angle Mount Hardware

Using “Angle-Mount” hardware will allow a Pet gate to be installed in any position including angled banisters and walls. Especially useful at the top of a staircase.

Bar Spacing

This term refers to the amount of space between the bars or slats in a gate. This is an important consideration especially if you have small breeds of pets you are trying to contain in a given area.

Basic/Standard gates

Gates that are considered to fit in a normal width doorway are called basic gates.

Expandable Gate

An Expandable gate is a term for the old accordion style gates that have been in circulation for years. It does not mean is can be expanded by adding panels or extension parts.

Fold Flat

This is in reference to a free standing gate where the side panels are hinged to allow it to be laid flat if necessary during storage.

Free Standing Modular Gate

This is a gate similar to a free standing gate but has no "feet" to help support the frame. When using the gate is it not straightened all the way out. Each panel remains at a slight angle to the one next to it, like a zig zag.

Gate Extension Kit

If it's necessary to add an additional panel to widen a gate, beside the extension panel there is a kit necessary to mount the panel to the main gate. This kit will include the necessary parts to do so.

Gate Mounting Kit

This type of kit generally refers to a specific manufacturers mounting requirements. For example Kidco sells a kit for mounting their gate to a stair rail and that requires special attachements.

Gate Spacers

Gate Spacers are used to build-up the wall areas equivalent to the thickness of baseboard, railing, or molding when installing certain pet gates

Hands Free

This is a gate using a foot pedal to open up a door in the gate without using your hands if you aren't able to use them.

Installation Hardware

This refers to the general hardware used to install a gate. It may include hinges, locks, screws, anchors or adjustment bolts.

JPMA

Stands for Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association. If you see this certification stamp it means that the gate has also been tested and approved for use around children according to the standards of this organization.

Mounting Cups

Sometimes certain gate installation requires a mounting "Plate" or "Cup" to be attached to the wall for more stability.

Optional Extensions

These are extensions you can purchase to make an extension gate wider.

Panel

Each rigid section of a gate that can move, fold or bend independently from other parts of the gate is considered a panel.

Pressure Mount

Refers to a gate installed using some type of pressure to hold it in place, using either a sliding width adjustment bar or adjustable pressure pads.

Side Panels

On free standing gates, side panels give the added stability that other gates do not have as a one dimensional gate.

Swing in, Out or Both Ways

Using a special hinge a gate using this system can have the gate move in one of three different ways at a time.
