The Top 20 Pet Gate Safety Facts

When you buy any of the pet gates available they are specifically designed for different uses and locations around the house. Making sure that you understand the different safety requirements of each gate is one of the most important rules before you purchase and use your new gate.

Consider everything before you think that you have found the perfect gate for your needs. Read the Product Detail and manufacturers installation instructions for all of the pertinent facts. If you aren’t sure you can always call them for their input. They are more than happy to answer all your questions. Follow the link below for a listing of the major Pet Gate Manufacturers contact Information.

Here’s the list of concerns in no particular order.

1) Only purchase a gate that can meet your minimum requirements for keeping the type and size of pet you have to keep confined

2) Never use any gate at the top of stairs unless it is specifically designed for that purpose

3) Pressure mounted Pet Gates are great gates, but DO NOT USE THEM AT THE TOP OF A STAIRCASE UNLESS DESIGNED FOR THAT PURPOSE!

4) Make sure that when using a pressure mounted gate the walls are capable of handling the force you exert on them, preferably with a stud behind them or in a doorway frame

5) Gates that swing in both directions are not for use at the top of the stairs

6) Some gates have a “bar” across the bottom for structural reasons. Don’t use for stairs…

7) Gates won’t prevent every pet from getting where they want to go

8) Pet Gates and gates to use around children are different

9) Don’t use a Pet Gate for keeping a child out of an area or conversely a childcare gate for a pet unless tested and certified for each case

10) Materials, dimensions, slats, pinch points, locking mechanisms, screws, unfinished woods can be harmful for either the pet or the child if not designed and tested for them

11) Install gates with a “locking mechanism” so that the lock is on the side opposite where a child may be

12) Just because there is a gate, don’t leave children alone around them

13) Even when the pet is confined, stop, look around and make sure that what they are locked up with can’t hurt them or they won’t destroy it!

14) Free Standing Pet Gates are nice but won’t contain the proverbial “bull in a china shop”. They simply won’t deter a larger more aggressive dog from getting to the other side of the gate.

15) If you have a smaller pet and are thinking of buying a gate with bars instead of slats, make sure your pet can’t lodge themselves in between and get stuck

16) When using installation hardware make sure before you start, that what you drive a screw into is capable of handling the load.

17) Don’t use gates that are not functioning correctly, broken or have parts missing

18) To prevent serious injury or death, securely install gate and use according to manufacturer's instructions.

19) Check all fasteners on the Pet Gates after using for awhile to make sure they have not loosened up and are still secure

20) Use a walk thru gate in high traffic areas or when an elderly person may need constant access so they don’t have to climb over or move the gate.

If you keep all these things in mind the process of buying and using a pet gate will be an enjoyable experience. You will be comfortable with your pet contained correctly and the gate will work and look well in your home.
